Brain Salad Surgery é o quarto álbum de estúdio da banda britânica de rock progressivo Emerson, Lake & Palmer, lançado em 1973 e primeiro pela gravadora Manticore Records.

A faixa mais conhecida é "Karn Evil 9 - 1st Impression, Part 2" (famosa pelo bordão Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends...). "Karn Evil 9" como um todo teve que ser originalmente dividida nos lados A e B do álbum. O CD estadunidense também dividia a faixa, mas lançamentos posteriores apresentavam a obra em uma só faixa.

O álbum continha o que de mais avançado existia em instrumentos musicais eletrônicos até então. Keith Emerson foi o primeiro e único músico a utilizar o protótipo Moog Constellation desenvolvido pela Moog Music Inc, apresentando pela primeira vez um sintetizador polifônico. Nos créditos do álbum, o aparato é descrito como Moog polyphonic ensemble, e pode ser mais claramente ouvido nas faixas Benny The Bouncer e Karn Evil 9: 3rd Impression. O protótipo foi entregue por Emerson de volta à Moog Music após o final das turnês deste álbum, e não foram produzidas outras unidades.1

Na faixa instrumental "Toccata", baseada no primeiro concerto para piano de Alberto Ginastera, efeitos especiais de sintetizador foram produzidos não por Keith Emerson mas por Carl Palmer, usando a técnica recém desenvolvida de sintetizadores de bateria. Ginastera aparentemente não ligou para a utilização de sua obra pela banda, nem cobrou seus direitos autorais. Pelo contrário, o compositor gostou da nova versão.

As letras foram co-escritas por Greg Lake e seu companheiro e ex-membro do King Crimson Peter Sinfield.

A capa do álbum foi desenhada por H. R. Giger, que também criou a arte do filme Alien.
