Peter Gabriel - Biografia

Peter Gabriel (Chobham, 13 de fevereiro de 1950) é um músico do Reino Unido, um dos artistas representantes da World Music, assim como um dos seus principais incentivadores. Apesar disso, sua carreira está intimamente relacionada ao pop. Tornou-se famoso por ser o vocalista, flautista e líder da banda de rock progressivo Genesis, partindo posteriormente para uma bem sucedida carreira solo. Peter também é envolvido em diversas causas humanitárias.

História.

Época no Genesis.

Peter Gabriel fundou o Genesis em 1967 enquanto ainda era aluno da Charterhouse School com seus companheiros de banda, Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford e Chris Stewart. O nome da banda foi sugerido por um colega, o empresário de música pop Jonathan King, que produziu o primeiro álbum da banda, From Genesis to Revelation.

Apaixonado pela soul music, Gabriel foi influenciado por diferentes fontes para seu canto, incluindo Nina Simone, Gary Brooker do Procol Harum e Cat Stevens. Ele tocou flauta no álbum de Stevens Mona Bone Jakon de 1970.

O Genesis tornou-se rapidamente uma das bandas mais comentadas da Inglaterra, e posteriormente, da Itália, Bélgica, Alemanha e outros países da Europa, amplamente devido a presença de palco de Gabriel, que envolvia diversas mudanças de vestuários bizarros e contos cômicos nas introduções de cada canção. Os concertos faziam uso extenso de luz ultravioleta enquanto as luzes normais estavam baixas ou completamente apagadas.

Entre as fantasias mais famosas de Gabriel (que ele desenvolveu como forma de superação de medo de palco), incluem "The Flower" (vestida para "Supper's Ready", de Foxtrot), "Magog" (também em "Supper's Ready"), "Britannia" (para "Dancing With The Moonlit Knight," de Selling England by the Pound), "The Old Man" (para "The Musical Box", de Nursery Cryme), "Rael" (para quase todo o álbum The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway) e "The Slipperman" (para "The Colony of Slippermen," também de The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway).

O vocal de apoio para Gabriel na banda era geralmente feito por Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks e Phil Collins, que após longa busca por um substituto, acabou tornando-se vocalista da banda após a saída de Gabriel em 1975. Sua saída da banda foi resultado de diversos fatores. Peter estava saturado da banda, e sua presença diferenciada no palco causou atrito com os outros integrantes. As tensões aumentaram na gravação do ambiciosos álbum The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway e respectivas turnês de suporte, um conceito criado por Gabriel. Durante a composição e gravação do álbum, Gabriel entrou em contato com o diretor William Friedkin. O interesse de Peter por um filme com Friedkin foi outro fator para sua saída da banda. A decisão foi tomada antes das turnês de suporte de The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, mas Gabriel permaneceu na banda até a conclusão da turnê.

O ponto de colapso foi o nascimento da primeira filha de Gabriel, Anna.

Quando ele optou permanecer com ela e sua esposa enquanto ela estava doente ao invés de entrar em estúdio, o ressentimento do resto da banda fez Gabriel concluir que deveria sair do grupo. Esta decisão foi retratada posteriormente na canção "Solsbury Hill".

O Começo da Carreira Solo.

Gabriel recusou intitular seus quatro primeiro álbuns solo (todos são chamados Peter Gabriel, com somente a arte da capa diferente), já que gostaria que eles fossem considerados o mesmo trabalho; posteriormente foram diferenciados através de uma numeração e pelo conteúdo da capa, na ordem I - Car, II - Scratch, III - Melt e IV - Security. Para os outros álbuns Peter continuou usando títulos curtos, como So, Us e Up. Os quatro primeiro álbuns foram produzidos entre 1976 e 1982 com o produtor Bob Ezrin. Seu primeiro sucesso foi o compacto "Solsbury Hill", uma peça autobiográfica expressando seus pensamentos ao sair do Genesis. Gabriel trabalhou com o guitarrista Robert Fripp (do King Crimson) como produtor em seu segundo LP solo, de 1978. Esse álbum era mais obscuro e experimental, e não trouxe hits.

O terceiro álbum, lançado em 1980, trouxe a colaboração com Steve Lillywhite, que também produziu os primeiros álbuns do U2. É notável pelos compactos "Games Without Frontiers" e "Biko" pelo novo interesse de Gabriel pela world music (especialmente na percussão), e pela grande produção, que fez uso extenso de truques de gravação e efeitos de som.

Sessões de gravação entre 1981 e 1982 com o produtor David Lord acabaram resultando no quarto LP, Security, cuja produção teve mais responsabilidade do cantor. Apesar do som peculiar e dos temas motivados pelo distúrbio, o álbum foi bem sucedido e teve um compacto de sucesso, "Shock the Monkey", que também tornou-se um videoclipe inovador.

Gabriel realizou turnês para cada um dos álbuns, continuando as apresentações dramáticas da época do Genesis, envolvendo preparações no palco, faces distorcidas por espelhos e maquilagem não usual. Para uma das turnês, toda sua banda raspou a cabeça. A turnê de 1982 e 1983 incluía uma sessão de abertura com David Bowie, confundido por alguns com Gabriel pela maquilagem, sobrepondo Bowie no auge de sua popularidade. As gravações dessa turnê foram lançadas com o álbum ao vivo Plays Live.

Os Anos de Sucesso.

Apesar de sucesso comercial e com a crítica nos álbuns anteriores, sua maior popularidade foi atingida em 1986 com So, com canções como "Sledgehammer", "Big Time" e "In Your Eyes". O álbum foi co-produzido por Daniel Lanois, também conhecido por seu trabalho no U2.

A canção "Sledgehammer" foi acompanhada por um videoclipe inovador, que ganhou diversos prêmios no MTV Music Video Awards de 1987, e estabeleceu um novo padrão para a arte na indústria de videoclipes. O mesmo aconteceu para "Big Time", um videoclipe feito em animação com diversos efeitos especiais. Peter apoiou bastante a Anistia Internacional nessa época. "Sledgehammer" também apareceu na trilha internacional da novela Roda de Fogo em 1986.

Em 1989 o cantor lançou Passion, a trilha sonora do filme de Martin Scorsese The Last Temptation of Christ. Muitos consideraram o álbum como o auge de seu trabalho na world music, e com esse álbum Gabriel ganhou seu primeiro Grammy.

Em seguida foi lançado Us in (1992) (também co-produzido por Daniel Lanois), um álbum no qual foi explorado problemas pessoais recentes; seu fracasso no primeiro casamento, seu relacionamento com a atriz Rosanna Arquette e a crescente distância com a primeira filha. A introspecção de Gabriel nesse álbum pode ser vista no videoclipe do primeiro compacto, "Digging in the Dirt", com o artista coberto de minhocas. Seus problemas com a filha foram explorados em "Come Talk To Me", que tinha vocal de apoio por Sinéad O'Connor. O'Connor também cantou em "Blood of Eden", o terceiro compacto do álbum. Logo após foi lançado o CD duplo Secret World Live (1994). Gabriel ganhou outros três Grammys por seus videoclipes.

Após uma grande parada para outros projetos, Gabriel lançou OVO em 2000 e Long Walk Home, trilha sonora para o filme Rabbit-Proof Fence que ganhou o Globo de Ouro. Em setembro de 2002 foi lançado Up, seu primeiro álbum de estúdio na década, produzido por ele próprio e com menos sucesso comercial.

Trabalhos Recentes.

Gabriel apresentou-se no Live 8 em julho de 2005, e um DVD do evento foi lançado. Também tocou no palco com Cat Stevens, 33 anos após participar do álbum Mona Bone Jakon. O evento ocorreu em Joanesburgo durante concerto para Nelson Mandela. No final de 2005 foi lançado novo DVD duplo, Peter Gabriel Live & Unwrapped.

A FIFA convidou Peter Gabriel e Brian Eno para organizar uma cerimônia de abertura para a final Copa do Mundo de 2006 na Alemanha. Peter começou o projeto no Olympic Stadium de Berlim, mas o espetáculo foi cancelado em janeiro do mesmo ano pela FIFA por falta de caixa e suposta falta de interesse, ainda que explicação oficial foi um potencial dano ao gramado do estádio.

Rumores de uma possível reunião da formação clássica do Genesis circularam entre 2004 e 2005, especialmente após Phil Collins declarar em entrevista que era aberto à idéia de voltar às baquetas e deixar Peter ser o vocalista. Gabriel encontrou com os outros membros em 2005 e 2006, e uma possível turnê para The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway foi discutida. Apesar de Gabriel declarar não ter se interessado pelo projeto, Collins, Banks e Rutherford escolheram embarcar em uma série de concertos do Genesis mesmo sem Gabriel.

Gabriel apresentou "Imagine" de John Lennon na cerimônia de abertura dos Jogos Olímpicos de Inverno de 2006 em Turim, em 10 de fevereiro de 2006.
